American model of the Alzheimer’s or Memory Café 

The American model of the Alzheimer’s or Memory Café celebrates the individual beyond the disease. It’s a respite from daily routines and issues relating to the diseases. Guests explore art, music, poetry and socialization. Laughter, love and merriment are the keystones of these cafes. Most of the host communities of these cafés offer numerous support groups for caregivers, freeing the cafés up to focus on socialization.

The first “Alzheimer’s Café” opened in Santa Fe, NM in October 2008.

Arkansas

European model of the Alzheimer’s or Memory Café

Most of the British Memory cafés have a focus different from the American model. The following US cafes follow this model combining social interaction with presentations, discussions, and professional advice on dementia and caregiving issues.

The first “memory cafés” in the US opened in 2005 in Colorado.
